Tough Terrain: GMC’s New Crossover Starts at $25,970

GMC’s smallest crossover SUV sees a redesign for the 2018 model year as well as a modest price bump. With a base price of $ 25,970, the all-new 2018 GMC Terrain enters the market with a starting price $ 975 dearer than its predecessor.

That price covers the base SL model, which comes standard with features such as a proximity key with push-button start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and LED taillights and daytime running lights. Power comes courtesy of a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that pushes 170 horsepower to the front wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission. Those looking for all-wheel drive will need to step up to the $ 28,795 SLE trim. The option adds $ 1750 to that base price, and opting for the SLE also opens up the option book to General Motors’ turbo-diesel 1.6-liter engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The 137-hp diesel inline-four pushes out a plentiful 240 lb-ft of torque and adds $ 3770 to the SLE’s sticker.

Above the SLE sits the SLT trim, which brings a big 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, leather seating surfaces, heated front seats, and a remote starting system to the Terrain. The model starts at $ 32,295, with all-wheel drive adding $ 1750 to the price. Choosing the turbo-diesel in the SLT costs just $ 2845.

Finally, GMC offers the Terrain in top-spec Denali form. The model wears a trim-specific grille and is the only Terrain to come standard with the 252-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission (this drivetrain is optional on lesser Terrains). The $ 38,495 Denali also comes standard with features such as a rear park-assist system, navigation, a heated steering wheel, and a hands-free power liftgate. All-wheel drive remains a $ 1750 option.

The 2018 GMC Terrain goes on sale this summer, with the initial batch of compact crossovers sporting the top-dog 252-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter engine under their hoods. GMC notes that Terrains with the smaller turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder and the turbo-diesel 1.6-liter four-cylinder will enter the market at a later date.
