2017 Hyundai Sonata Tested in Depth: Good, but Good Enough?

The Hyundai Sonata is a story of upward mobility. It started at the bottom and today, almost two decades later, it has arrived—a formidable mid-size-sedan contender. Well built, spacious, and reasonably fuel efficient, the Sonata has all the hallmarks that consumers in this class want. The brand even offers hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants of the Sonata for more eco-conscious shoppers. Still, Hyundai’s bread-and-butter four-door isn’t all butterflies and unicorns. The Sonata lacks the driving finesse that makes competitors such as the Honda Accord and the Mazda 6 so enjoyable to pilot. On top of this, the Sonata’s styling is staid, and the car’s most powerful engine, a 245-hp turbocharged four-cylinder, falls flat in comparison with the V-6 engines of its competitors.
