2019 Mazda MX-5 RF – Test Drive

New Technology Need Not Apply

Spanning nearly 30 years in existence, it was really the original Mazda Miata that set the standard of what the convertible roadster should be. That said, new technology need not apply here. Just more clever engineering to achieve one objective: create the ultimate bio-mechanical driving experience.

The fourth generation (now-called MX-5) released in 2015 started off with a soft top fitted with Mazda’s latest SKYACTIV-G 2.0 engine promising better fuel economy and a lighter chassis while retaining the signature organic feel. The hard-top convertible RF model under test was released the following year.

What’s New

Year 2019 adds a 30mm telescopic steering wheel adjustment to further customization of driving position. Aesthetics also updates the upgraded 17″ and standard 16″ wheel color from gun metal gray to metallic black. Soft-top buyers now also have the option for a brown colored canopy on the GT trim.

But most notable update is the upgraded internal design of the SKYACTIV-G 2.0 engine. Maximum engine speed gets a boost from 6,800 to 7,500 with horsepower output peak of 181 horsepower at 7,000 RPM. Low-end torque has also been increased to 151 lbs.ft at 4000 RPM giving a wider power band to play with. Transmission is offered in either a 6-speed automatic or manual.

The Aesthetic Experience

There’s none quite like it; not even the clone attempt of the Fiat Spider. The sloping front hood, razor sharp eyes, and sophisticated T-beam of the Retractable Fastback (RF) all makes up for a unique, sporty and posh visuals.

Despite its visual complexity, the interior of the RF remains organic for the most part. The triple-dial cluster reserves one for a multi-functio display for tire pressure monitoring, fuel economy and trip information. Center console employs a basic triple dial climate control push button knob and the well-proportioned 7″ infotainment screen is handled by Mazda’s HMI commander switch.

Closing and retracting of the automated roof is as simple as holding down a momentary switch located in the center console. The process takes about 15 seconds provided that the vehicle speed is no greater than 10 kph.

Most importantly is the preservation of the signature cabin ergonomics with its cozy seats with integrated BOSE speakers, with deep analog bass, and perfect placement of the leather wrapped gear shifter. Tech features like heated seats, heads up display, and power electric seats and torque vectoring are stripped out of the equation for an all hands on tech driver requirement.

Road Practice

Engine revs feel eager with the increased lower end torque and raised maximum engine speed. Driving feel remains organic with a well anticipated linear power output from the naturally aspirated engine, and the 6-speed manual transmission offers transparent physical feedback leading all the way up to the gear lever.

Final Thoughts

Without a doubt, the essential ingredients of the Miata are preserved with the fourth generation MX-5 while continuing to make more room for advancements and engineering in the powertrain in itself. Fuel economy also scores a highpoint of 26/35 mpg city and highway.

The MX-5 RF in North America offered in two trims. The GS-P will get you the essential features inclding power retractable rooftop and 17″ wheels, Bose sound system at a starting price of $41,815 while the RF GT trim comes upgraded with Sirius XM, leather trimmed seats and Kodo design stitching, adaptive front lights and additional safety features including traffic sign recognition. That bumps up the price to $44,815.
