The Car Maintenance MILEstones

Our cars are often one of our most expensive investments. As such, it should come as no surprise that we treat them like one of the family. We spend our weekends buffing their panels, and doing what we can to ensure they get the TLC they deserve. All the better for protecting your investment and getting the most from your motor, right?

Of course. But, what you might not realize is that car maintenance takes more than the odd go-over with a cloth. No matter how careful your driving, certain things will need attention at some stage during your vehicle’s life. Like people, cars suffer from age, or mileage, to be more precise. And, if you ignore that, no amount of cleaning will cover the issues you face.

With that in mind, we thought we’d give you a rundown of the maintenance you need to make time for, mile by mile.

3,000-7,000 miles

Many of us would still consider our cars as babies at the 3,000-mile mark. But, all babies need changing sometimes, and your car is no different. So, when your mile-counter crosses the 3,000 mark, it’s time to think about oil changes. Many manufacturers now state it’s not essential to change every 3,000 miles. But, you will need to tackle this at some stage before the 7,000 mark, so make sure to keep an eye on things. Don’t think you can stop at oil, either. Change your oil filter while you’re at to ensure your baby’s bottom is clean as can be.

15,000-25,000 miles

15,000 miles is the golden number for the first garage visit. Letting the professionals take a look at the inner workings of your motor is always a good idea. And, every 15,000 miles seems to be a pretty good indicator of when. This also takes pressure off your shoulders. As the miles rack up, things like your battery and air filter may need attention. And, you can rest easy the garage will check all that for you. Job’s a gooden.

40,000 miles

Things are getting serious now, with 40,000 miles marking time for a battery and spark plug check. These generally wear down, and you don’t want to be caught short when that happens. So, replace your spark plugs now, and check the condition of your battery. If it isn’t fully charged, it’s time to get a new one.

60,000 miles

Lastly, we have the big 60,000. This is when you need to think about everything from brake pad replacement and brake fluid, to suspension components and tires. In truth, those all-over checks at the garage should have all this covered. But, this is the milestone at which you check near enough everything you haven’t already. 60,000 miles is a long way, after all, and even the best vehicle will need a little sprucing at this stage.

So, there you have it. The mile by mile guide to maintaining your vehicle. When you break it down, it really doesn’t look that bad. Does it?
