Car repairs can be costly and there are some that specialist equipment is needed, especially on the more modern technologically advanced cars.  Not many people attempt car repairs themselves these days, but there are some minor things you can do yourself and save some dollars. Some procedures are incredibly easy and kinder on your wallet.

Changing The Battery

You should always wear protective gloves and goggles when you do this, as the acid from the old battery could splash and burn you. You need to disconnect the negative cable first and reconnect it last and apart from that never touch the acid deposits which usually are powder. It is not a long job that as long as you take the precautions mentioned you would be able to complete fairly quickly and easily.

You may be surprised how many people take their vehicles to a mechanic to get this simple job done and pay out far more than they need to. No matter what vehicle you have, when you can buy items such as batteries at reasonable prices you should be able to do this job yourself.

Repair a Head Gasket Leak

If you have a water-cooled engine and the head gasket springs a leak, it will let coolant into the engine cylinder, which can cause a great deal of damage. It can be easily remedied with a sealing product that you add to the coolant. This will find the leak and plug it.

A leaking head gasket sounds like a major problem, but when you can buy aids such as this, it will at least stop more damage being done. This can be even more important if your vehicle is also used for work and is on the road a lot.  There are specialists in some vehicles that can help. For Instance, at Warner Vans of Utah sprinter van parts are readily available at prices that will not break the bank. You can usually find whatever parts you need in similar places.

Changing a Tire

The secret to changing a tire is having the right tools. They should always be in the trunk of your car in case you have a flat while you are out. You have to remove the hubcap and loosen the lug nuts with the vehicles wrench. Then jack the car up and remove the lug nuts. The wheel will then come off and you can put the new one on. Then do all of the above steps in reverse to secure the new wheel and tire.

Make sure your handbrake is on while you are doing this.

Touch Up The Bodywork

Your car will get minor scuffs that often you only notice when you are cleaning it. Then they become annoying because now you know they are there. You can buy touch up kits in most car parts stores and they are available for the majority of makes and colors of cars.

You just need to follow the instructions carefully and in no time at all your bodywork could look like new.

Doing these jobs yourself could save you quite a bit of money, and will make you feel a bit like a mechanic yourself.
